SYNOPSIS

René Descartes: Architect of the Modern World is the first installment of the new Seaburn Wisdom series, whose primary purpose is to whet the appetite of readers to further explore the riches of the Western philosophical tradition.  The format for each volume in the series is the same, consisting of: 1) a brief biographical overview; 2) a survey of a particular thinker’s philosophical legacy; and 3) a survey of how a thinker’s philosophical vision is relevant to us in contemporary times.  As with a precious stone, the worth of any book length profile of a great thinker should not be based upon its size, but upon the way it illuminates the various facets of  an intellectual landscape that might otherwise be left unexplored.  In this book you will encounter both the birth pangs of modernity, as it unfolded in the mind of its seminal architect, René Descartes, as well as some of the ways in which once revolutionary ideas came to construct the prism through which we perceive what both Shakespeare and Huxley referred to as our brave new world.
